Military Testing and Training Range Sustainability

The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Biologically Inspired Technology (BIT) Team develops and implements innovative environmental solutions that help sustain military testing and training ranges. By combining in-situ soil stabilization, contaminant immobilization, and water treatment technologies, the BIT Team enables realistic training conditions while safeguarding environmental resources and surrounding communities.

Military Training

Military testing and training activities expose ranges to repeated vehicle maneuvers, live-fire exercises, and other operations that can introduce heavy metals, energetic compounds, and emerging contaminants into surrounding soils and water resources. The Biologically Inspired Technology (BIT) Team within ERDC's Environmental Laboratory (EL) provides specialized technical expertise to help government partners mitigate these impacts while preserving realistic training environments.

The team develops, tests, and implements integrated environmental solutions that stabilize soils, control contaminant migration, and protect water resources across active training ranges. These approaches are validated through laboratory research, engineering analysis, and pilot-scale studies to ensure their effectiveness under real-world operational conditions.

Together, these integrated surface and subsurface solutions help sustain mission-ready military ranges that remain operationally effective, environmentally compliant, and resilient over the long term.

Key Offerings

Soil Stabilization
Design and deployment of engineered soil amendments and non-invasive vegetative cover systems to reduce erosion, suppress wind-borne dust, and minimize contaminant migration from active training ranges

Surface & Subsurface Water Treatment
Evaluation and implementation of active and passive filtration systems, including permeable reactive barriers and specialized media to remove contaminants from runoff and shallow groundwater

Partnership & Collaboration

Inquiries from interested parties will be received directly by the ERDCWERX team. Following initial discussions, ERDC will determine which agreement mechanism is the most appropriate.
